Here is what Dennis Campbell said in The Observer newspaper yesterday about the programme yesterday:
‘Wild, energetic sex is key to conception’
Men usually produce about 250 million sperm during intercourse. But those who are fully stimulated because they are enjoying “gourmet sex” will ejaculate up to 50% more than that, according to research revealed in a Channel 4 documentary tomorrow. An extra five minutes of sexual activity before ejaculation can produce an extra 25 million sperm, said Pacey. That, plus the fact the extra sperm released are of a higher standard, means there is a greater chance of the sperm and egg fusing to create a new life.
“The better the sex, the better the chances of conception,” Dr Joanna Ellington, an American expert in reproductive physiology, says in the programme, The Great Sperm Race. “One of the things that men don’t realise is that the more excited they are, the further back in the testicle they are going to draw on reserves [of sperm]. So if you have what I call ‘gourmet sex’, where you really spend time and you make it fun for both partners, that is going to make the man more stimulated and he is going to ejaculate more and healthier sperm.”

HOW SOON CAN I DO A PREGNANCY TEST?
This must be the question we are asked most often:
Pregnancy tests come in a range of sensitivities, as a general rule, the lower the sensitivity, the earlier the test will give a positive result. The most sensitive home pregnancy tests available is the ultra 10 mIU test.
We know lots of people wish to test early, and for some, with irregular or erratic cycles, knowing when to test can be challenging.
In this situation, the earliest time at which hCG is possibly detectable is 8 -10 days after conception. This is dependent on early implantation and placental development to a level able to cause urinary concentrations of hCG in excess of the sensitivity of the pregnancy tests used.
If you do decide to test early, always use your first morning sample, use an ultra sensitive pregnancy test, and be prepared to re-test at 48 hr intervals, and if you do get very early positive results, always confirm these a few days later (as sadly some very early implantations do not continue

STEROIDS MAY PREVENT UP TO A THIRD OF MISCARRIAGES11/9/08
I read this article below in The Times September 10, 2008 and thought it may be of interest to some of you.
Women who have suffered repeated miscarriages or failed IVF treatment could become mothers by taking a course of steroids, trials have shown.
Up to 3,000 unexplained miscarri-ages, a third of the annual total, might be prevented each year by the drug, the British Association conference in Liverpool was told yesterday. Siobhan Quenby, of the University of Liverpool and the Liverpool Women’s Hospital, said that tests involving 120 women had identified natural killer cells as a cause of miscarriages and failed IVF embryo implants.
Natural killer cells are beneficial in most of the body because they can destroy infected or malignant cells, but in the uterus they have been found to promote rapid growth of blood vessels when present in high numbers. The blood vessels transport additional oxygen-bearing blood and can cause miscarriages or prevent embryos implanting.
Steroids have been given to 40 women by Dr Quenby and three quarters of them have successfully given birth. All had previously had multiple miscarriages.
Dr Quenby, in partnership with the Miscarriage Association, is looking for 40 women with high levels of natural killer cells and a history of miscarriages to take part in a trial.

FERTILITY CLINICS URGED TO CUT NUMBER OF MULTIPLE PREGNANCIES3/9/08
Saw this fertility related article in the Guardian 3/9/08
Fertility clinics were issued with fresh guidelines yesterday to help reduce the number of women who have multiple pregnancies after IVF treatment.
Britain has one of the highest rates of multiple pregnancy in Europe, with doctors warning that they put women and their babies at far greater risk of medical complications. Under the guidelines, clinics will be encouraged to transfer only single embryos to the womb whenever the procedure is likely to be successful.
At the moment most clinics transfer two embryos at once, which boosts a woman's chances of becoming pregnant, but also increases her risk of having twins.
The proposals, published in the journal Human Fertility, set out ways for clinics to reduce multiple pregnancies. In the UK, 87% of multiple pregnancies are in women under 37 and having their first cycle of treatment. A key recommendation is for women who are younger than 37 who have several good-quality IVF embryos, to have only one transferred at a time.
